Dear reader,

Since the time when Charles T. Dotter performed first angioplasty (1964) and Andreas Grüentzig performed first coronary angioplasty (1977), the field of interventional cardiology has witnessed an unprecedented growth. Although the idea of remotely accessing and opening up blocked coronary arteries from the groin must have seemed outrageous during those times, what has unfolded thereafter has been nothing short of pure fictional stuff! Within a couple of decades, the whole procedure of reaching the coronary arteries and intervening within the lumen of the tiny vessels had been made to appear very simple. Since the initial experimentations, innumerable innovations have been made in the technique, the stents, the balloons, and the delivery systems over the years. New vistas have opened with the advent of imaging modalities such as IVUS and OCT, which promise to take the field to even higher levels of precision and procedural success. The field has expanded with the successful use of devices for defects such as ASD, VSD, PDA, LAA appendage, and para-prosthetic leaks. Percutaneous intervention is now a force to reckon with even in valvular procedures such as AVR (TAVI) and MVR (MitraClip), wherein high-risk surgery is avoided and the patient is discharged without scars in a short period! From valves to vascular interventions in the cranium to peripheral vessels, this journey has been truly extraordinary! Today, interventional cardiology promises to offer a solution for just every form of cardiac illness, which, till sometime back, was amenable only to surgery. These advancements have changed the face of cardiac care unimaginably, for the good of mankind! And remarkably, this field has such enormous promise that in spite of all these astounding advances, it seems as if the journey has just begun and much more is in the offing!

Given the explosive growth the field of interventional cardiology is witnessing right now, one will agree that it is not easy to keep pace with all the developments from an academic point of view. This hectic pace of development coupled with the highly technical nature of the modality necessitates a dedicated medium for disseminating the vast and rapidly evolving knowledge base in this field. Considering this, the previous editor of Indian Heart Journal, Prof. Sundeep Mishra, conceived a new journal—Indian Heart Journal Interventions or IHJ Interventions. He also created the initial framework for this journal during his term. The new editorial team has subsequently built on this initiative, and it now gives me immense pleasure to present to you the first issue of this new offering from the IHJ family!

The IHJ Interventions has been envisioned to serve as a platform for publishing high-quality work in the field of interventional cardiology with a strong emphasis on its contemporariness as well as its relevance to the Indian population. At the same time, every effort will be made to ensure the robustness of the publication process to maintain the same high standard of the publication, as is expected of any reputed international journal and with which our flagship journal—The Indian Heart Journal—has come to be associated with.

With these objectives in view, the first issue of the journal comprises elegant editorial reviews on highly contemporary topics including dual antiplatelet therapy, left main coronary interventions, and the rapidly evolving field of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in India. These articles are complimented by a collection of original articles and case reports encompassing different facets of cardiac interventions. I sincerely hope that you will find this issue scientifically enriching and stimulating.

This journal would not have become a reality without the support of so many individuals, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of them! First of all, I thank the Cardiological Society of India leadership, including the current President Dr. K Sarat Chandra, Honorary General Secretary Dr. Soumitra Kumar and other senior members of the Executive Committee, who entrusted the new editorial team with the responsibility to manage the Indian Heart Journal and then extended all the support to prepare and launch the IHJ Interventions. I also profusely thank the editorial board members who enthusiastically responded to my call to author reviews at a short notice, authors who submitted their work to this journal, publishing team at Wolters Kluwer Medknow, and our editorial team members who put in an enormous amount of hard work to bring to fruition this dream. A special thanks to Prof. Sundeep Mishra for envisaging this journal and for laying the foundation for the same.

I now invite you to read this inaugural issue of the journal, provide your valuable feedback, and most importantly, contribute your work to IHJ Interventions.

Looking forward to your wholehearted support.

Wish best wishes,

Manish Bansal,

Editor, IHJ Interventions
